If we were to measure by peak height above sea level then starting with Mount Everest all 10 of the tallest mountains in the world would be in the Himalayas. The problem with doing that, however, is that the dividing line between a mountain with multiple peaks and separate mountains is not always clear. For this reason a better measurement to use is called “topographic prominence” which measures the difference between its base and its peak .
